Abstract
In reflecting on the concept of liberal education Whitehead s philosophy is very useful. Whitehead s philosophy of education has not a little been researched until now, but his thought have hardly been connected to liberal education. Therefore, I will reflect on liberal education through whitehead s thought about liberal arts and education. Whitehead s cosmology can be summed up by the creative advance from ‘many’ to ‘one’ or the process of ‘concrescence’ that a subject appropriates objects. Whitehead explained macro-cosmic process by the terminology of ‘nexus,’ ‘society,’ ‘our cosmic epoch,’ etc. Whitehead s universe is the ‘living nature’ that a subject appropriates objects. The life in the narrow sense means the creative process of making ‘novelty’ by ‘reversal of concept.’ Whitehead applied this cosmology to human in his theory of civilization. In this theory of civilization Whitehead emphasized on the ‘generalization’ that is adventure of ideas and the beauty that is teleology of process. Whitehead s philosophy of education maintains three steps of romans, precision, and generalization similar to his cosmology and theory of civilization. Whitehead s process philosophy can provide aid to reflect on liberal education. First, Whitehead showed holistic paradigm that liberal education sublimates and completes expertise. Second, Whitehead let us understand liberal education from an view point of life. Third, because of Whitehead s philosophy, we can see liberal education from a imaginative, creative, adventurous standpoint. Fourth, thanks to Whitehead s philosophy, we can think of liberal education in terms of aesthetic perspective. His philosophy is a precious resource for the future of liberal education.
Key Words: Whitehead, liberal education, process philosophy, civilization
