Abstract
According to the current college entrance standard suggested by the Ministry of Education or each college, it is premised that the intermediate level of the ‘Test of Proficiency in Korean(TOPIK)’ is capable enough to achieve academic performance in college. However, this is no more than an arbitrary standard with no verification of its validity for now as there have been no researches on the accuracy of it. Therefore, there should be more researches on this area. Thus, this study aimed to understand the correlation between the pre-college Korean language ability and the post-college academic achievement, targeting the Korean language learners with academic purpose studying abroad in Korean college. Especially, this thesis conducted a survey and interview with foreign students by using the qualitative research method. This study was participated by foreign students of four-year-course college in the capital area of Korea. This study followed the research procedures such as ‘1st survey, 2nd interview, Transcription of interview recording, Data coding & interpretation’. In the results, the credits that the research participants completed in the first semester were average 17.3. In case of GPA, it was average 3.3 of 4.5, which was mostly high. However, there was no clear correlation between Korean language ability and GPA. In order to find the causes for this phenomenon, the transcribed interview results were analyzed through coding. As a result, this study drew the conceptual categories such as ‘nature of TOPIK, percentage of using Korean and English in college, Differences in Evaluation Criteria for Foreign Students, and the matter of having knowledge related to major’. Based on such results of this study, this thesis verified that the academic achievement of foreign students would be influenced by not only TOPIK score, but also many factors. This study suggested the necessity to develop the tools for the evaluation of academic performance ability in the future.
