Abstract
In this study, I examine the trends and variations in grade distribution using the data from several institutions of higher education including the University of North Carolina, Louisiana State University, and Princeton University. I analyze the patterns of grade inflation, grade compression, and grade inequality by such academic units as colleges and departments. The causes and consequences of grade inflation are discussed. In addition, I review some of the policy measures that were introduced to address grade inflation issues.
Key Words: institutions of higher education, grade inflation, grade compression, grade inequality, alternative evaluation system, external examiners
