Abstract |
In 2001 MIT launched the online platform known as MIT OpenCourseWare (OCW) to share the course syllabus, lecture notes, assignments and test materials freely and openly. More than 133 million individuals have accessed the resources of over 2000 MIT courses since then. In May 2012 Harvard and MIT announced that they formed a partnership, edX, to offer free online courses from both universities. In this paper I review the history of the development of massive open online courses (MOOCs) at some of the major institutions of higher education in the United States. I discuss the possible effects of MOOCs on the internationalization and democratization of the opportunities for higher education. |
