The purpose of this study is to examine the current conditions of arts education curriculum for the undergraduate students at Seoul National University, and to provide suggestions for its improvement. The primary sources of the data for this study were from the on-line survey of the course evaluation of the 1st semester in 2008, the Focus Group Interview(FGI) data for the course evaluation of the 2nd semester in 2008, and the transcription data of the symposium on the development of the convergent arts curriculum. The students reported that there was a considerable shortage in the current arts curriculum, in terms of both quantity and quality. The FGI data indicated the great needs for the activity-based arts curriculum. Finally, this study suggests, as an alternative model of the curriculum, the integrated arts education tradition in Chosun dynasty(primarily in the 15-16th century in Korea) in which the confucian elites(called “Seonbi”/literati) were trained in various artistic genres ranging from poetry and caligraphy to Oriental paintings. |
