Abstract |
This study aims to compare the participants’ affective domain such as interest, anxiety, motivation, attitude, self-confidence, and cultural factors such as cultural understanding and social distance for peer ESL tutors and adults native English speaking teachers. This study was conducted at 2011 Winter English camp of a university located in Dae-jeon city, and 29 students participated in the survey.
The questionnaire were two kinds. One was pre and post self-evaluation consisted of 21 questions, and the other was post structured questions with 6 questions for detailed information for the statistical results. The statistical results show camp participants have more interests and self-confidence, less anxiety, feel more social distance when they communicate in English with ESL speakers than they do with native speakers. Also they have more interest and self-confidence when they communicate in English with peer tutors than they do with adults teachers.
This result implicates more possibilities for tutoring with peer ESL tutors for Korean university students who have limited opportunity in communicating in English, and this study suggests that university authorities provide tutoring during camp as well as semester, and prepare tutors training program for more effective and successful tutoring program with peer ESL tutors. |
