Analysis of the current situation of science as liberal art in liberal arts education - focus on the major universities of the metropolitan area

Abstract
In this study, we will review liberal arts courses in the major universities of the metropolitan area and analyze the current situation of science as liberal art in liberal arts education. Among the major universities in the metropolitan area, Kyunghee University, Korea University, Seoul National University, Sungkyunkwan University, Yonsei University, Ewha Womans University, and Hanyang University will classify the liberal education curriculum as a standard model for liberal arts education, and compare the status of liberal arts education to basic education. In the section of the liberal arts education, the proportion of ‘sciences as as liberal art’ and ‘humanities and social sciences as liberal art’ will be compared. Recently, the major universities are revising their curriculum to foster creative talent that will lead to a rapidly changing future society. Looking at the contents of the liberal arts curriculum, it reorganized ‘Core Courses(중핵교과)’ and ‘Distribution Requirement Courses(배분이수교과)’ area of Kyunghee University, ‘Core Liberal Arts(핵심교양)’ area of Korea University, ‘Worlds of Knowledge(학문의 세계)’ area of Seoul National University, ‘Equilibrium Liberal Arts(균형교양)’ area of Sungkyunkwan University, ‘Required Liberal Arts(필수교양)’ of Yonsei University, ‘Creative Integration(창의융복합)‘ area of Ewha Womans University, and ‘Core Competency Liberal Arts(핵심역량교양)’ area of Hanyang University. And Based on the expertise of humanities, society, science, art, we are operating a creative and interdisciplinary education program. However, the liberal arts education in the universities is still centered on humanities and basic education such as foreign language or computer and computer basics. From now on, the major universities must develop cultural education contents that reflect the operation of liberal arts and university characteristics. To discover and introduce many stories in the history of science, it is necessary to organize a textbook compilation committee consisting of science and technology, and develop a curriculum of science as liberal art education in the university.
