Abstract
Education environment is rapidly changing into smart education environment. Nevertheless, following contents and models of education are not various enough and underutilized. Therefore, this study investigates the new education model for college writing education to ease the problem. Since students are more familiar with visual media, the most effective format of writing education could be film review. In this sense, the aim of the study is to suggest smart education model through film review writing. A film review can be written in individual, but it can create better effectiveness by collaborative learning. This study compares two different collaborative writing of film review, one in off-line environment and the other in smart education environment. In off-line education environment, students work through crossing correction. In this case, only students in the same group can share their works while the whole class can share the works in smart education environment. The study proposes 4 step-model for collaborative film review writing in smart education environment. The model premised upon the condition that students see the film text before the class. The first step is checking attendance and answering to the multiple choice questions using Clickers. For second, students solve pop-quiz which consists of subjective questions. The questions are based on the contents of the class. Third, the instructor leads students to brainstorm using Kakao Talk group chat. In this step, the instructor first suggests one or two topics that can help students to participate in chat. Then let students raise questions and answers to the questions by their own. Kakao Talk group chat enables longer conversation and later helps the class share group members’ replies. In class, instructor shares answers for the questions or quiz, and Kakao Talk chat room through screen. Using this, instructor can evaluate students’ understanding of film text and class. Add on that, students can compare their answers which helps better understanding of the text. Lastly, complete a collaborative writing of film review using Google Docs. This study analyzed the case of film review writing on Room (2015), directed by Lenny Abrahamson, through crossing correction and the case of collaborative film review writing on Poetry (2010), directed by Chang-dong Lee, using smart devices. Through the result of comparison analysis, the latter appears to be more effective in collaborative learning. The study has a significance in introducing new education model through collaborative writing case using film and smart devices.
