Abstract |
In many classes of general biology the importance of introductory chapter has been commonly overlooked. This study was carried out to point out that such attitude can miss more efficient way in performing the course. Many general biology text books were designed to stand out their strengths and introductory chapters summarize the strengths. The summarized strengths are demonstrated in descriptions of life, themes of biology, and scientific methods. Therefore, introductory chapter should be regarded as an essential part to be given lesson. In this manuscript, we stress the importance of biological themes such as cells, genetic information, interaction with other individuals, regulation, relationship between structure and function, hierarchical structure, and evolution. Among these, evolution is the core. These themes should be working as principles among various and huge amount of biological features. Keeping these themes in minds, it is expected that students can reach higher performance in studying biology than before. In addition, this may be helpful for students in obtaining literacy of liberal education, i.e scientific thinking. |
