Abstract |
This study aims to analyze the characteristics and needs of the adult students in a cyber university to improve the optimal content for listening courses catering to their goals and expectations. In order to investigate the learner needs, surveys and online discussion were carried out with the students enrolled in a listening course at a cyber university. The need analysis showed the followings: 1) most adult learners in cyber university have stronger intrinsic motivation in learning English, prioritizing self-development and genuine interests in communicating in English; 2) linking sounds, fast speech rates, and colloquial expressions were the main factors to block them from comprehension while listening; 3) the students preferred learning through practical everyday conversations, authentic movies or dramas to news or informative materials as an listening input; 4) some of the listening skills that the learners found useful were communication patterns, colloquial pronunciation, and culture studies. They also considered comprehension questions and dictations more useful than listen and repeat or listen and record activities. These findings imply that the learners will be greatly benefited if those characteristics and needs implemented on the content/curricular development for listening courses. |
