Abstract
This study aims at reviewing present General English programs in Korean universities and proposing a curricular model of Current Issues in English (CIE) to realize both liberal education and key competencies education. A carefully-designed CIE model is needed especially because present standardized English courses are limited to communicate seriously about the world around college students. A CIE model could work for cultural education for intermediate level learners, who are equipped with basic communicative competence and ready to raise their awareness of the text and its contexts. With instructors’ proper input in language and culture, students are expected to develop moderate level of cultural literacy. This paper examines a specific CIE course implemented in 2013, from its design to its fulfillment and the survey. In this course, a teaching community developed class materials together for the students who were shy and reluctant to express themselves. With various edited authentic materials from real world, educators helped learners improve their critical literacy toward the world and themselves. The review of the survey on this course indicates that students need more guidance from educators. Educators’ eagerness to teach more with better materials were highly appreciated by students. While the lack of eagerness from the learners’ part is regretful, more various trials from the educators are strongly encouraged.
