Abstract
We live in a world where almost every aspect of life is increasingly dependent upon scientific and technological progress. Science and technology (S&T) are no longer specialized subjects confined to scientists and engineers; they have become intertwined with each other and furthermore with society. With the trend toward knowledge-driven societies worldwide, modem society produces scientific and technological knowledge at a rate where it is almost impossible for a layman to keep a clear overview. Therefore, education of S&T is indispensable not only to achieve sustainable development but also to create a scientifically and technologically literate citizenry. Today we face serious problems of energy and environment, all of which stem from S&T. Therefore, these days there are so many issues in the news papers that are related to or borne out of S&T. For example, there are trans fats, environmental hormones from plastics, nuclear waste problems, electrical cars, renewable energies, and global warming due to carbon dioxide and so on. This course focuses on understanding public issues of mainly environment and energy. The course would allow students to have opportunities in reviewing quite recent news paper reports on the related issues and learn how S&T influences the modem society. In today’s society, to know just scientific and technological facts about the issues doesn’t always give unequivocal solutions for those public issues. However, the education of S&T will ,at least, create a scientifically and technologically literate citizenry, and furthermore make a citizenry think reasonably and scientifically about the issues. This paper provides a case study of the class of “ Modem Society and Science & Technology in Kookmin University.
