The Effect of Extracurricular Activities and Adaptation to College life on Academic Self-efficacy and Academic Achievement of Undergraduates

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of extracurricular activities, adaptation to college life, self-efficacy and academic achievement of undergraduates. The subject of study was conducted among 601 undergraduates from a four-year university in Chungbuk province in Korea and analyzed the relations among those variables. The data collected through the Academic Self-Efficacy Scale, University Life Scale, Student Competence Scale, the relationship among the variables can be summarized as follows. First of all, the higher their school years and their grade point averages were, the higher their academic self-efficacy was. In addition, the higher the frequency of their participation in extracurricular programs was, the higher their academic self-efficacy was. Next, In case of adaption to college life, the higher the frequency of participation in extracurricular programs was, the higher their ability to adapt to college life was. We could also find that, based on the results of competence of students, the higher their GPAs and the frequency of program participation were, the higher their competence was. Finally, the structural model analysis was conducted to investigate the effects of extracurricular activities and adaptation to college life on self-efficacy and academic achievement. It was found to have. In conclusion, it was found that that participation in extracurricular activities and college life adaption had a significand effect on academic self-efficacy, and academic self-efficacy was a significant preditor of academic achivement. Therefore, this study suggests the necessity of institutional support and the importance of adequate environment for extracurricular activities since the degrees of participation in extracurricular activities and adaptation to college life had influence on academic achievements.
