Operation of A Course for Sex Education Based on Biology and Its Resulting Outcomes

Abstract
Since a few decades ago, middle and high school have offered sex education extensively and resulted outcomes to an extent recently, in our country. However, the annual abortion rate is still higher than many other countries such as U.S. and U.K. while the rate of using condoms is low. Taken together, these facts have urged universities to carry out sex education more in depth and width. Therefore, many universities including Yonsei University, have performed the education both through regular curriculum and extracurricular program. Regular curricula offered by Yonsei University include several courses for social sciences but not natural sciences. This is the reason why we opened a course called ‘Life and Sex’ at 2016, The ground of this course is that perception of sex can be enhanced when based upon understanding of life. Therefore, students were anticipated to be armed with biological approach and knowledge. With this course, students can secure concrete resources in building viewpoints on life and sex at on hand. In other hand, students may come to know that reproduction which includes sex emerged as life originated on earth. Students’ feedback on this course performed at the ends of three semesters showed high points at increase of knowledge for life and sex, helping formation of viewpoints, and problem-solving capability. We rated educational attainments of this course based on students’ writings made on each class hours. The students’ replies showed the reasons why life is important are corroborated with five biological key concepts suggested by American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Also included in the replies show that students need knowledge on sex and to redefine viewpoint of sex. In summary, students could see facts of lives and sex provided by this course. And this course seems to be helpful for students in redefining their viewpoints on life and sex. Further it is anticipated that students can solve practical problems posed on their lives and sexes in scientific ways in the future.
