Abstract |
Many researchers have found that most undergraduates are not well aware of the importance of general education, which may result in disappointing general education experience. Since academic advising is for promoting positive education experience by having students adequately understand the meaning of college education, it was researched to see if academic advising can play a role in improving students’ perception on general education and contribute to increasing the effects of general education ultimately.
Firstly, YONSEI RC101, a first year seminar taught by professional academic advisors at Yonsei University, was closely examined. It was found that YONSEI RC101 clearly explained the meaning of college education, the structure of general education, and specific competencies one can attain by taking a general education course. Also a survey given before and after the course indicated that YONSEI RC101 improved students’ level of understanding on the goals of general education and understanding of the general education structure. It was also confirmed that it promotes students’ perception on core competencies a student can develop through general education and increased student exposure to the purposes of general education. |
