Abstract |
In the late 19th century, Morrill Land-Grant College Act enabled the establishment of many state universities nationwide, and resulted in the crisis of the liberal arts colleges in the US. Liberal arts colleges had to compete with universities equipped with vocational majors such as agriculture and mechanical arts. But it was not until 1980s that the number of liberal arts colleges fell dramatically. Worries grow as some liberal arts colleges merged with bigger universities and others closed operations. Many predict the majority of liberal arts colleges will disappear or lose their identity. In the mean time, some universities in Korea introduced liberal arts colleges (K-LAC). K-LAC is unique in that it is a college covering liberal education within a university. We may expect K-LAC will restore liberal education, once neglected or distorted in Korean university system. For successful settlement of K-LAC system, some consideration of the followings is suggested. We need to find the best Korean word equivalent to ‘liberal arts’ first. We also call for increased efforts to promote public understanding of the value and importance of liberal arts and liberal education. Finally, close scrutiny will be necessary for the extension of liberal education under the liberal arts college system. |
