Abstract
In this study, an example of developing and operating a general education course in the consilience division for a semester was presented. The course was designed to trace the interaction between the scienc and the human society via the medium of materials, both chronologically and spatially, and to investigate the flow of human idea in the process of adapting to the environment by advancing the civilization. The lesson plan was formulated based on scholarly writings and documentary films for general public, out of the framework of ordinary ‘introductory’ courses, so that the concept of consilience can be conveyed effectively. All the study materials as well as the lectures were delivered in English for international students. Each class was composed of episodes in which the process of consilience was reviewed, and the episodes were systematically connected one another to point to the topic of the week. Upon concluding a semester, evaluation and responses obtained from the students indicated that the class was satisfactory for a general education course and the students acknowledged the objective of the class and the intended aim of the instructor. In the future, it would be desirable to enhance the clarity of the contents as an English class and to author a consolidated textbook that is tailored for the course.
