Abstract |
The current article aims at conceiving local and global programs for enhancing Korean students’ Character and Citizenship in the glocal era in order to offer some theoretical and practical comments for developing educational programs required in the multimodal communication society. For this purpose, the terms such as character and citizenship were redefined in the broader global dimension than other definitions. Drawn upon contents, methods, assessments, examples of international researches and cases, some issues related to developing glocal education programs of character and citizenship for students was discussed.
Firstly, character education is defined as developing attitudes and behaviors as a basis of interdependence between self and others, and civic education as developing abilities and skills necessary to make decide the important social issues together and to be responsible for one’s own life and glocal communities. Secondly, it is suggested what we give attention to for conceiving local and global character education based on the domestic and overseas cases. Finally, direction of the education for local and global citizenship is discussed.
It could be considered that a variety of programs for character and citizenship education are conceived depending on the situation of each colleges and universities. For instance, it is possible to integrate to existing classes, to develop a stand-alone course or to plan extra-curricular workship. Especially, it is necessary to ensure that the programs are connected with pre-teacher education curriculum to link the processes of character and citizenship education at elementary, secondary and tertiary level. Furthermore, it is critical that educators have the mind-set regarding good character and citizenship. Further studies on the designing concrete courses and lesson plan should be continued for benefiting from character and citizenship education. |
