Abstract
In this study, college students’ awareness on the liberal and character education was investigated and analyzed with 1,135 students at J University located in Chungcheongnam-do as target. As its results, it was found that first, 1,025 students (90.3%) responded that they feel the need for character education at university, showing a high level of their awareness. As for the reason for the necessity of character education, 462 students (407%) pointed out the lack of personality as college students and adults, and 441 students (38.9%) the need for self-development for themselves. Second, in terms of the awareness on the benefits of character education, 752 students (66.2%) turned out to be more than satisfied with its benefits, saying that it was helpful in their humanity development, and 554 students (48.7%) responded that they think of character education as the one that helps them make their career and dream through self-discovery. Third, the results of the awareness on the character education showed that 895 students (78.9%) were more than satisfied with the course content with an average of 4.07 points, and 866 students (76.3%) were more than satisfied with professors’teaching methods with an average of 4.06 points. Meanwhile, the specific open comments on the meaning and value of character education recognized by college students include ‘self-discovery’, ‘establishment of detailed plans and objectives’, and ‘help to build human relations’ in order. It is expected that the above results will contribute to presenting the future directions of character education in fostering desirable values of college students, thereby helping to realize efficient liberal education at university.
