Abstract
This study has two aims. The one is to rethink of effectiveness for ‘Reading and Discussion’ based on the teaching experience of ‘Reading and Discussion’, one of the curriculums for the common cultural subjects in Daegu Uni. The another is to seek for a new effective way ‘how to read and discuss’. It begins with the assumption that there is no difference between special problems in Daegu Uni. and general problems in another Universities in Korea. Reading is a precondition for writing and discussing. To strengthen the reading education, a lot of authorized books are recommended, reading certification systems are introduced and curriculum subjects for reading books are opened in the most of the universities. Even though reading education was carried out through ‘Reading and Discussion’ curriculum in Daegu Uni., the institutional inertia of integrated teaching and learning system could not achieve the original goal of common cultural subjects. ‘Reading and Discussion’ has been only another way of ‘writing’ curriculums. Reconsidering several problems caused from reading education which has just read data and short stories according to the topics, we should find out a new way to teach ‘Reading and Discussion’ to solve such problems. So we introduce the new way as not thematic reading but cultural key word reading. The curriculum, ‘Reading and Discussion’ aims to help the students understand the common sense about the world and create new ideas. To make this aim more or less easily achieved, we suggest ‘Reading Cultural Key Words’ which is the standard for understanding of the text and enhancement for refinement of modern society s key issues. The curriculum’s content is to teach cultural key words by means of crossover. For example, liberal art courses’ deficiencies are filled with art, music, physical and engineering ones. Also fine arts, physical and engineering ones’ lacks are substituted with liberal arts, fine arts and physical courses. First of all, the specific suggestion for teaching contents is to develop 30 cultural key words. Second, every cultural key words will be written in English. It is considered that English is a world-wide used language. Third, a book with 30 cultural key words will be written by virtue of the experts’ help in each course such as literature, linguistics, history, philosophy, fine arts and engineering. Lastly, based on the book and the contents, the teaching process will be done through reading, discussing and presenting.
Key Words: liberal education, humanities, reading, discussion, guide to reading, cultural key-words
