Abstract |
The paper discusses the issues for the conservative and progressive vision in Korean education, investigated from the perspective of modern educational philosophy in the Republic of Korea. The paper explores the contents of major contemporary philosophy of education, based on progressivism, essentialism, perennialism, and constructionism. Progressivism emphasizes student based teaching and learning activities. Essentialism concerns teacher and textbook-centered education. Perennialism tries to educate students based on the great 100 books. Reconstructionism wishes to realize the self-actualized society through education.
The paper is also highlighted major issues in the field of Korean education, such as high school equalization/school choice right, free meal policy, student Human Rights Ordinance, and academic achievement assessment. In 1974 the high school equalization was performed, but the conservatives have always demanded school choice right. In 2011, the debate on free meals for the elementary students in Seoul was heating up and the conservative mayor of Seoul was replaced by the one of progressivism. As the progressive School Superintendent of Seoul announced the human rights ordinance for students in Seoul, the Ministry of Education objected with the policy. Academic achievement assessment is already being conducted, but some of the progressive oriented superintendents are opposed to the government policy.
It examines conservative and progressive views on each educational issues and problems. Through the conclusion it tries to point out ways to improvement for the educational development in the Republic of Korea. |
