Abstract |
Recently, as the importance of SW competency increases, various studies are being conducted to provide SW education not only for SW majors but also for SW non-majors. Computational thinking is an important concept to effectively educate SW non-majors. But, most of the related studies have been conducted on learning effects and problems from the learner s perspective. In this paper, we investigate the perception of computational thinking education from the instructor s point of view to identify the problems and propose improvement methods.
We surveyed 1,395 students taking computational thinking and problem solving courses at C University. According to the survey results, learners with previous learning experience of computational thinking concept or programming recognized the need for SW education more than those who did not. And the experienced learners were identified as 39.93% of the total responders. Based on the results of the learner survey, the survey was conducted to instructors about their perceptions, problems, and solutions for computational thinking education. As a result, the instructor replied that the contents of education should be linked with the learner s major and have practicality. In addition, the instructor replied that learners should be recognize of the necessity of SW education and that the composition of education contents considering the learner level was important.
Reflecting the instructor s opinion, the solutions for solving the computational thinking education problem proposed in this paper are as follows. First, daily life examples should be used for education and the educational contents should be composed by considering the relevance of the learner s major. Second, an operation plan for learners with past programming experience should be prepared. Third, we need to develop a tool that can objectively measure the competencies of each learner s computational thinking. |
