This study explores the elements of core competence in workplace English within the context of English Proficiency Graduation Certification (EPGC) that has implemented over the last 20 years and National Competency Standards (NCS), a new policy on the job market, which was launched in 2018. After a series of in-depth critical literature reviews on EPGC and NCS, empirical data were collected from secondary data sources (e.g., EPGC details, skills in job description) available on the websites of 30 general universities and 15 public corporations as well as 50 private enterprises. Qualitative content analysis was undertaken to identify the elements of core competency based on NCS. The findings of this research are as follows: As per documentation, translation skills and email-writing skills are required, while oral communication skills in English for presentation, meetings, and counseling, including VIP interpretation, are considered to be a core capability. Within reading comprehension area, basic proficiency in understanding user manuals is essential for the general tasks whereas the expert-level of proficiency for translating contracts/agreements is important for the overseas business roles. Regarding other capabilities, the ability to organize complex schedules for international events is one of the key competencies for workers responsible for global businesses. This empirical study may contribute to further researches in EPGC and NCS focused on improvement of graduates command of the English language and the development of the English education programs for the Korean universities. |
