Abstract
The basic solution to solve the challenges faced by Korean college education today, is to achieve a qualitative differentiation of education tailored to the needs of the students. In this regard, Capstone Design is a lecture model aiming to enhance the students real competence. It is meaningful not only in a specific major field such as engineering, but also in all major fields including liberal arts education. At the level of college education, especially in the fields of liberal arts and humanities, there is a strong sense of conventional perspective and attitude that education is delivered through classroom lectures. It is necessary to explore new educational methods required by the times we live in such as student-led, field-based educational methods, which might be appropriate for the changing new environment. In order to strengthen the linkage between the local community and the university after the LINC+ project in 2017, this study was conducted to delve into the case of the Innovative Capstone Design Course run by the OO University Department of Sociology. We attempted to find out the meanings and contributions the Capstone Design Course offers in order to improve college education. As a result, Capstone Design lectures, which employ the concepts and merits of ‘learning to solve problems’, ‘expressive results’, and ‘community-based team learning’ methods, were found to have a significant and positive impact on college education by identifying students creative ideas and stimulating student participation. Therefore, it is necessary to actively introduce and utilize such alternative ways of lectures in college curriculum in various academic fields including liberal arts education, humanities and social studies.
