Abstract
Integrative thinking is so important in modern society, more than ever the necessity of reading is being emphasized. Omnidirectional reading is very important especially for university students learning professional knowledge and going out into the world. Reading discussion enables students to understand the contents of the book they missed while reading and to develop the ability to express ideas logically. It is necessary that engineering students should read humanities cultural books and humanities students also should read engineering compendium though it is not a professional book so that both students could be equipped with basic culture and knowledge. In reality, however it is true that both students have difficulty for these courses. So, the researcher of the study estimated that it would be worth of utilization of reading materials before reading discussion in terms of enhancing students understanding books and increasing their participation in reading discussion. Accordingly, materials on discussion book were prepared and the performance of reading discussion according to when and how the distribution of the materials were examined. The performance was compared between the subject group to whom discussion materials were already distributed in advance before actual reading a discussion book and the control group to whom the materials were only distributed just right before reading discussion. Also whether there are differences in reading discussion performance between the subject group to whom discussion materials were directly distributed by hard copy and the control group to whom only web-site for students reference as of soft copy was given were analyzed and compared. As the results, it was found out that the subject group to whom discussion materials were already distributed in advance before actual reading discussion book understood the general subject and contents of the book better and also conveyed their opinions better than the control group. For the result of material distribution method, it was found out that the subject group to whom discussion materials were directly distributed by hard copy received higher scores on understanding the subject and contents of the book than the control group. In conclusion, if you make an attempt to utilize reading materials before reading discussion for the activation of reading discussion, you should apply it by considering first there are differences in reading discussion performance according to when and how the distribution of the materials. I think more various attempts should be made in order to increase students voluntary participation in reading discussion.
