This study was conducted in order to examine empirically the gender difference in freshmen experience in Korean higher education institutions. The sample of the present study was 461 female and male students who participated in the freshmen survey implemented by a four-year university located in a large city in Korea. Freshmen experience of the sample was explored according to the conceptual framework suggested by Strange & Banning(2001). In the analysis, meaningful gender differences were found in college GPA, social and economic status, and social interactions of college students. Being female was found to negatively affect student’s sense of belonging, safety, and engagement with other individual variables controlled for. However, acquiring a full membership of college community was free from the gender effect when the sense of inclusion and safety and student engagement were controlled for. Policy implications were discussed based on there results. |
