Study on formation of study course image and function of imagination in moral liberal education

도덕적 교양교육에서 교과 이미지 구성과 상상력의 기능에 관한 연구
The liberal education of morality does not directly teach or instruct learners on specific moral rules or values, but indirectly helps them experience the meanings of human sufferings or doings through various courses of liberal study. This may be termed as a ‘moral’ liberal education. The most important thing in the moral liberal education is just to form an image of the course under study by connecting it to the situations of particular human lives, and encourage learners to have an aspiration or motivation of studying it. The necessity of forming the study course image could be made through the reasoning of analogy with respect to moral theories to the moral images of world. The moral image of world is critical in building moral theories or cultivating morality because morals to be applied should be consistent with it. Similarly, with the moral liberal education, the formation of a moral image of the course under study becomes extremely critical as it is the extension of moral cultivation. If the liberal education does not separate from particular human lives but mirrors them, the images of world being its home or background should be first integrated into the educational contents thereof. That is, the education should be connected to various aspects of lives while mirroring them well. The required connecting or mirroring is possibly made by repeatedly watching and discussing the relations among the study courses, and the relevant practical life conditions. For example, with the subjects of literature or arts, such relations are known by the aesthetic experiences exerted through reading or appreciating literary or artful contexts. This paper argues that the moral image is significant in establishing moral theories, and analogically, also in the morally-oriented education. The essential function of imagination in forming the required moral images is illuminated, while finding the way of cultivating it.
