Abstract
This essay tries to reconstruct the meaning of classics reading (or great books) education as general education through the integrated humanities approach as the way to innovate undergraduate education to overcome the current crisis in higher education in Korea. While answering to the questions of why to read classics , this essay regards the classics reading education as a model example of the integrated humanities which articulate the disciplines not only in humanities but also in the whole basic sciences including natural sciences. On the other hand, which classics and how to read the classics questions are regarded as the practical issues, not theoretical issues. To solve the issues, this essay examines the case of one university s experience in the innovation and practice of general education.
Key Words: the crisis of higher education, integrated humanities, general education, liberal education, liberal arts education, the classics reading education
