The Fourth University Revolution and the Future of Liberal Arts Education

Abstract
This article looks into the history of university to clarify the reason of existence of university and penetrates into the future of 1iberal arts education to reaffirm the value of existence of university. University is a production of history. It has been invented and innovated itself. Today, it is right in the process of its fourth revolutionary change. The first university revolution put the liberal education into university system. The second was to long for integration of humanity and learning. The third spread out the distribution requirement model. The fourth is to advance to platform university, convergence university, innovation university and entrepreneur university. In the time of the fourth university revolution, 1iberal arts education is standing on the path of life or death. One is the way of improvement, and the other is the way of reform. It will go to improvement by extinction maintaining its current system with a focus only on partial improvement while it will go to reform by independence restoring its essence with creation of a new 1iberal arts education. Universities should institutionalize reflection and insight while facing liberal arts education. Change is meaningful only when it is made by its subject. General education should overcome the way for improvement and go for reform. It should redefine its main body, make sure of its identity of contents and routinize its methodical innovation. The existence value of a university is on the existence reason of human. That is, 1iberal arts education should be on formation of human.
