Abstract
One of the problems frequently attested to in the General Education curriculum is the absence or lack of articulation within the curriculum. Such an oversight is a consequence of adding or closing courses in a haphazard and groundless way. In order to remedy this problem, S University has established a Curriculum Mapping System. The system has divided the curriculum into sub disciplines, to each of which a curriculum mapping supervisor was assigned. The role of such supervisors is to examine the sequence, articulation, and scope of the courses within each discipline. S University has made use of the findings of the administration of the mapping system in order to further refine the General Education curriculum. Such refinement comes in four types; development of new courses, improvement of the current courses, relocation of the courses, and changes of course titles. These modifications were also well reflected in the process of developing questions for the survey of students’ needs analysis and evaluation of their satisfaction of the courses offered. Furthermore, S University has developed curriculum maps corresponding to the disciplines, utilizing the outcomes of the mapping system. These maps clearly show (1) the whole batch of the courses, (2) the articulation among the courses (from basic to more advanced courses), (3) division of each discipline into sub fields, and (4) a brief description of each course within the discipline. In such a way, the maps enable students to self-guide when signing up for classes. Lastly, another set of maps linking the curriculum maps to extracurriculum was created, with an Abstract 466 (제13권 제2호) aim of invigorating the extracurriculum. S University will continue running the mapping system in order to further boost its strengths and remedy its weaknesses regarding the General Education curriculum. By doing so, it is hoped that it will set a new standard in quality monitoring of the General Education curriculum. Over time, an academic advising system will also be established that can serve a unique, self-guided course registration system.
