Abstract |
This paper examines a specific “English through Literature using Multimedia”(ELM) course implemented in 2018 from its design to its fulfillment, and proposes an ELM model might realize liberal education in the aspects of language competence, critical literacy, and literary imagination. This ELM model was designed exclusively for intermediate level EFL students to study authentic English expressions with more interest and think critically about serious issues through textbooks and video clips. According to pre-survey, these students were motivated enough but still reluctant in actively participating in learning English. Post survey revealed ELM could help students achieve initiative to access more English texts through prints and videos. With the blend of online and off-line study materials, ELM offered students more opportunities to be exposed to critical thinking, let alone English competence. Students also pointed out they were positively affected by instructors active encouragement. Several significance of this ELM model might be derived: first, EFL faculty found it useful to know how multimedia facilitates the teaching and learning of literary texts. Second, educators’ eagerness was most highly appreciated by students, helping students meet their academic, emotional and psychological needs. Finally, it should be regretfully pointed out that visual materials often overwhelmed students so they did not pay proper attention to the texts, and improvement of eagerness from the learners’ part was not significantly recognized. |
