Abstract |
The purpose of this case study was to analyse the policy of general education of community college in USA which has emphasized importance of general education of vocational program in order to obtain for implications for development and delivery of general education of university college in Korea. The research questions are four related to the general education policy of community college, the purpose and curriculum of general education, the delivery of general education and the implication for us. The research findings were that community college has dwelt on general education program for satisfying industry needs and students’ longterm pathways. Two case colleges - Stella and Charles Guttman Community College(NY) and Cascadia Community College(WA) - set institutional learning outcomes including lifelong learning competency, problem solving skills, cognitive skills etc. in addition to job skills. General education curriculum which amounts to more than 25% of whole curriculum has been developed in relation to learning outcomes. and coursed are delivered in according to the learning outcomes. In many cases, courses are implemented based on the student-centered and capstone experience. The findings drew the three implications of general education for university college education in Korea as follows. Firstly, the purpose of general education of university college needs to be covered broad competencies to respond to this ever-changing job environment. Secondly, general education curriculum should be developed on the base of learning outcomes rather than shortterm practicality. Thirdly, general education should include student-centered activity such as capstone experience, service learning and so on. The researchers would like to emphasize that this kind reorganization of general education can be available on the basis of whole innovation of the institution and the continuous support for the individual university college level should be provided by the nationwide professional agency. |
