The Study on the Effect of Debate on Argumentative Writing

Abstract
The objective of this study is to consider the effects of debate activity on the argumentative writing. Thus, in order to understand the concrete effects of debate activity on the writing knowledge of argumentative writing, a case of argumentative writing performed by liberal arts course of university was comparatively analyzed. After learning about the procedure of writing, and having debate activity, students received the task of argumentative writing. In the results of marking in accordance with the evaluation standard, many students received higher marks in task2 written after debate activity than task1. Analysis of the two data using the corresponding sample t-test revealed a statistically significant increase. Especially, out of evaluation items, the change in the content score was the biggest. In the results of analyzing tasks focusing on the aspect of content, there were several factors of increased scores such as consistency of point, logicality of grounds, dialogicality, and propriety of data utilization. The results of this study show that debate activity had effects on the enrichment of argumentative writing.
