Abstract |
This study compared two types of teaching methods (Coached Flipped Learning and General Flipped Learning) to examine the effect of Coached Flipped Learning on the writing abilities of English students. The participants were 49 university students enrolled in two English classes. A pretest was given in Week 2, and the treatments lasted for 5 weeks from Week 3 through Week 7. A posttest was administered in Week 8 to assess the learners progress. The results of the posttest showed that the Coached Flipped Learning Class, which was more advanced, performed significantly better than the General Flipped Learning Class when assessing writing ability. A questionnaire survey was administered in Week 8 to find out the participants’ opinions about General Flipped Learning and Coached Flipped Learning in terms of interest and perceived effectiveness. Furthermore, 20 participants from the two treatment groups were interviewed to recognize the participants’ opinions about Coached Flipped Learning and General Flipped Learning. The analysis of the results showed that the participants’ attitude of Coached Flipped Learning were more positive and the participants of Coached Flipped Learning reported that Coached Flipped Learning was very helpful in enhancing their interaction and learning performance. The results of the interview showed that two types of Flipped Learning had various advantages and disadvantages. However, the participants of Coached Flipped Learning showed more positive opinions. The overall results of this study indicate that Coached Flipped Learning has beneficial effects in students’ English writing ability. |
