The purpose of this study is to analyze the present condition and character of leadership education as a general education in Korean universities. I analyzed the 44 classes among the courses related to leadership in general education curriculum. The results of the study are as follows. First, it consists of competence based education content focused on experiential learning. Second, Leadership curriculum does not deal with leadership as an independent subject in itself, but there are a lot of leadership courses combining university characteristics and social issues. Third, there are many forms of leadership education linked with various extra-curriculum program of universities. As a general education, I suggested that leadership education should be a competence based education that can set community goals and maximize the ability of communication with members. Also leadership education should reflect universal goals of university education. It should be established as a systematic and integrated education that reflects the ideals of education and philosophy of each university. Leadership education should not be vocational and professional education focused on specific fields. Leadership education should be a whole-person education that fosters thinking ability and expressive ability. The curriculum should be developed so that leadership education meets the fundamental nature of general education that promotes social wisdom and insight. |
