Development of a Creativity Program for University Students through the Liberal Educational Approach

Abstract
Even though creativity is a very essential core competency required for university students, it is a representative competency that is not cultivated through the current university education. Preceding researches on university creativity education state the necessity to set up diverse courses considering the essence of creativity and the direction of creativity education. Assuming that the liberal educational approach could play roles in effective curriculum for the increase of university students’ creativity, this study aims to develop a creativity curriculum of liberal educational course. Based on the theoretical consideration of creativity education in the aspect of liberal education, this study analyzed the contents of domestic/international courses and programs related to creativity education. A model was set up by dividing the direction of creativity education into self-realizing creativity, educational creativity, creative thinking development, integrative creativity, and eco-contextual creativity, and then the educational contents & activities were summarized. In order to apply it to the creativity course of liberal curriculum, the lesson for 13 weeks was composed/conducted. In the results of analyzing the effects, students’ creative ability, attitude, and motivation were significantly improved while their belief in change of creativity and their perception of the importance of creativity were increased. This study is expected to be contributing to the establishment of a foundation of liberal curriculum fostering creative ability, and also to the vitalization of university creativity education showing insufficient operation compared to its importance of the time.
