Although it has been a pretty long time since college of engineering has been teaching technical writing, engineering students are not good at writing for technical communication. Also, engineering design curriculum has been changed quite significantly more than a decade ago. However, it is said that engineering graduates are poor at developing creative design concepts. By studying research papers, four reasons to teach the subjects of both cornerstone design and technical writing in one course are to be discussed. The first, solid definition of design problem is the foundation for inventing solutions. Second, language artifacts aid the invention. Third, those language artifacts should be produced on the base of rhetorical situations. Lastly, rhetorical situations of design is a domain where technical writing could be effectively taught. With the understanding of these background, an integrated course of engineering design and technical communication could be developed.
