Abstract |
Hesse s first novel Peter Camenzind, which is a ‘Bildungsroman’, closely demonstrates the internal and external growth process of its main character, Peter.
Though there is criticism that his ultimate growth is not very successful, the process is more important at the educational level. Below are the key factors in determining or affecting Peter s development process from childhood to mid-20 s.
The first key factor is the inspiration from nature. It s nature that plays a crucial part in cultivating his poetic feeling and personality. Nature also gives a strong body to him and implants eco-consciousness close to pantheism as well.
Secondly, three unanswered love affairs play a significant role in reflecting the meaning of women and his character even though they all fail.
Friendship also has a crucial meaning in his growth process. Peter meets Richard at college, who is optimistic and outgoing young man from a rich family, significantly changing Peter who is skeptical and passive. Another friend, Boppi, who is hunchback, has great influence on Peter s inner growth in a way that is different from Richard s.
The last factor that influences on Peter s growth is his service for the pubilc when a storm hits his hometown. Poppi s death and the need to take care of his aging father bring him to his hometown stricken by a massive storm, where he takes the lead to restore the village. Peter who was a son of a poor farmer returns home as a mature adult after going through a variety of things in life. |
