Abstract |
University faces digital natives as learners nowadays. In this situation, this study proposed digital citizenship education as a new form of citizenship education in college-level general education curriculums, and looked at various aspects of digital citizenship. Because digital natives are the generation who spend a lot of time online, accessing information and expressing themselves through digital technology, their citizenship is expressed in a way different from traditional forms.
The concept of digital citizenship is discussed from two different perspectives. The first view is a more focused view on digital media, which defines digital citizenship in terms of ethical use of digital media. The second view is more closely related to the characteristics of participatory and actualizing citizens and defines digital citizenship as the ability to participate in society online.
In accordance with the second view, digital citizenship education in universities should be taught at a more fundamental level that encompasses higher thinking abilities based on digital technology. In other words, the goal of digital citizenship education as a general education curriculums in universities is to cultivate actualized citizens who are aware of community and global issues based on technical internet ability, who actively participate in political issues on the internet as the 62 - (제11권 제3호) subject of networking, and who hold a critical point of view.
This study is meaningful because it calls attention to digital citizenship education as a part of general education in higher education and provides basic information for various practical and theoretical discussions related to digital citizenship in the future. Based on this study, the practice and discourse of digital citizenship education should be continued in the general education program. |
