The purpose of this study is to develop Core Competency Assessment for college students. This study aims to develop and validate this assessment reflecting on educational mission, educational goals, and educational objectives. Additionally, this study examined the effects of students’ college year, college major, and campus location on core competencies. There are six different core competencies and two of them have two sub-competencies (see Figure 1 and Table 1).
A total of 10,752 H college students responded to Core Competency Assessment. In order to develop and validate this assessment, expert group discussion was executed for content validity and internal consistency reliability and exploratory factor analysis were conducted by using SPSS 21.0. Results from the exploratory factor analysis resulted in 37 items as the final assessment. In addition, MANOVAs were conducted to investigate the effects of college year, college major, and campus location on core competencies. The results showed that junior and senior students had higher levels of the most of the core competencies, compared to freshman and sophomore students. In addition, students who were majoring in Arts and Physical Education had lower levels of all of the core competencies, compared to other majors. Students who were majoring in Science and Engineering also had lower levels of the most of the core competencies. Furthermore, students who were studying at Ansan campus had lower levels of all of the core competencies, compared to students who were studying at Seoul campus.
In conclusion, this study is significant in order to provide a guideline to educate students meeting H university’s educational missions. Also, other universities can use and adopt the result of this study designing an assessment tool aligned with their educational missions. |
