Abstract |
This research aims to explore the relationships between ‘creativity’ and ‘thinking styles’ of engineering students in Korea, and to provide an explanation for the development of creativity related courses and programs. It has been reported that Korean engineering students lack ‘creativity’ compared to those in other disciplines. However, according to the examination of both domestic and overseas researches concerning the relationships between creativity and thinking styles in engineering students, few studies have focused on them in terms of the engineering curriculum. This study was conducted with 452 engineering students at P University, and especially their everyday creativity and thinking styles have been evaluated. Our findings show that firstly, there were significant gender differences in everyday creativity of engineering students. Second, there were significant gender differences in thinking styles. Male students obtained high scores in legislative, external and hierarchical styles. Whereas female students got high scores in hierarchical, legislative and external styles. Third, there were significant correlation between the two factors and significant correlations among variables of subcategories, too. Everyday creativity has been influenced by legislative, local, external, liberal and conservative styles. These findings could be applied to designing creativity related courses in university as well as to their amelioration. |
