Abstract
In this article, citation is defined as an inclusion of various outside texts in order to secure validity and consistency of arguments, or the equivalent rhetoric strategies. Hence, the citation is a way of demonstration that borrows the external logics for reinforcing the internal reasoning and providing a concrete basis of arguments. Moreover, citation is analogous to the mechanism of human cognition in a way it contributes to the strategizing on problem-solving, as it guides through the perception of the problem, analysis on the situation, and integration of the gathered information. Students, as they are constantly expected to acquire new knowledge, are in particular need to employ the external authority and prove their own internal thoughts and logics. Under this premise, this study will focus on the educational potential of citation. It will first categorize the characteristics and functions of citations as a rhetoric strategy for reasoning into : definition, authority, example, statistic, text, analogy, and graphic. Furthermore, it will also look into the educational efficacy and potential that citation has. In the process, the purposeful, proactive, and intertextual qualities of citation will become evident.
Key Words: citation, rhetoric strategy, writing for arguments, definition, authority, example, statistic
