Abstract |
This study suggests forming effective small groups and efficient role dividing system as practical ways to make up for some problems such as clamorous classroom environment and free-rider effects of small group-oriented cooperative learning. A case study applying these two ways to a real teaching spot was conducted in 2016 with 97 students in the first grade taking College English Reading 1 at Hoseo University. Students’ average TOEIC score was 417. For forming effective small groups, the number of each group s members was limited to four, and each group was formed by both student-selected and instructor-determined composition methods. And each group members sat facing each other. For managing efficient role dividing system, each member in a group was asked to take one of four roles; a reporter, a recorder, a timekeeper, and a checker. A leader of each group managed his/her group members roles to be rotated well. To help this, a worksheet and a table to check each group member s role were offered in every class. After 10 weeks, a survey was conducted for students satisfaction. The results of the survey showed 51% of students were satisfied with the current way of forming small groups. And over 90% of students were pleased with allocating one special role for each group member and rotating this role in every class, which means this way worked well as a good solution for the problem of free-rider effects. |
