Abstract
In Korea, the national demand on women’s economic activity is growing more and more according to the decline of birth rate and potential labor. Also women’s economic activity is expected as the momentum for national development with their competitive performance in emotional approaches. Responding these social trend, government and universities are aggressively expanding gender equality education. This study aims to analyze the current aspects and problems of the gender equality education in Korean universities, and suggest the resolutions on it. As a research materials, the annual performance reports of action plan for gender equality from 2015, of 18 national universities in Korea 2015 were analyzed; the contents of the gender equality education was categorized into subject and nonsubject education program and divided into four types; gender consciousness empowerment, career development guide, business performance training, and employment capability empowerment. The main results of this study are as follow; first, those gender equality education in universities are not settled yet since the education programs are enforced by government, not spontaneously participated by those universities’ members themselves. Second, the range and scope of the gender equality education are too broad to categorize the education programs. Third, the gender equality education is obviously run as nonsubject program more than subject program so that it cannot be long-term education with coherence. Fourth, only the large-scale universities actively run the gender equality education programs with retention of their systematic and institutional infrastructure. Fifth, the subject programs are focused on gender consciousness empowerment; unlike the nonsubject programs on career development guide and gender consciousness empowerment therefore the support system for education programs does not exist. Reflecting the above research results, here are the resolutions for gender equality education in Korean universities; to expand a gender sensitive perspective in university campus, to categorize and systemize the gender equality education programs, to increase the regular subject programs for gender equality education, to build up government policy for activating the gender equality education in university, and to develop the balanced and effective gender equality education programs reflecting the difference of male and female students.
