Abstract
To date, the students who have very different cultural, emotional, physical characteristics such as those with multicultural background or disabilities increase in our education system.. However, our education system focusing on totalitarianism or collectivism is very limited to include these various types of students. Post-modernism emerged as a new social philosophy can help us to introspect conceptually how our education system include these diversities of students. Thus, this thesis tried to investigate the connective concepts of multicultural and inclusive education, which representatively endeavor to include variety of students, based on post-modernism. For this purpose, to begin with, the background of post-modernism appearance was explored and the four major concepts of post-modernism such as ‘uncertainty’, ‘pluralism and relativity’, ‘self-subjectivity’ and ‘self-reflection’ were reviewed by comparing it with modernity. Next, the conceptual development of mulitultural education was explored and the four major concepts of multicultural education such as ‘cultural receptiveness’, ‘security of equal opportunity’, ‘re-structuralization of education system’ and ‘continuous efforts’ were reviewed. Also, the conceptual development of inclusive education development was explored and the five major concepts of inclusive education such as ‘natural and general placement of education’, ‘instruction and learning for all students’, ‘adequate educational supports and modification for attendance’, ‘sense of belonging, homogeneity, acceptance’ and ‘ coordinated efforts as one team’ were reviewed. By these reviewing, three basic concepts, ‘break from self-centeredness’, ‘recognition and acceptance of difference’, and ‘change and development based on mutual interchange’ were emerged on which multicultural and inclusive education could conceptually meet each other based on post-modernism. In conclusion, these connective concepts are in the same context with Hongikingan, basic philosophy of Korean education, proposing that education should make an efforts for every students to realize their unique potentials, because all students have different characteristics and potentials.
