Abstract |
This study aims to develop an interdisciplinary program for college students which combines content-based English learning with dietary management and nutrition education. The English-Nutrition interdisciplinary course is designed to implement its pedagogical contents and categories according to the schedule of one semester. The study presents detailed lesson plans of the first theme ‘sugar and health.’ In the introduction of the lesson, a newspaper is used for students to recognize seriousness of excessive intake of carbonated beverages, and it is also designed to learn basic English words and expressions related to sugar intake. Then, a fact sheet including the risk of eating high sugary foods is used to develop students’ reading comprehension and writing skills. The next step is to improve listening skills while watching a TED-Ed video clip about the relationship between sugar addiction and the brain. Authentic ‘Nutrition Facts’ is also used to understand the concepts of ‘serving size’ and ‘serving per container’ in English. The post-activity is especially designed to implement STEAM education: ① Science for understanding sugar addiction, ② Technology for creating a blog, ③ Engineering for making video clips, ④ Arts for using photos and graphs, and ⑤ Mathematics for conducting a survey and analyzing the data. As a result, the English-Nutrition interdisciplinary course not only improves the quality of life by having nutrition management skills but also enhances English abilities through meaningful engagement. This new interdisciplinary education is essential for cultivating talented and creative individuals. |
