Abstract
Civic education at the university is linked closely with the nature of liberal education. At the university, liberal education should get college students ready for their life as active citizens. Only then will civic education at the university be the domain to represent liberal education. Therefore, we can achieve the value of civic education actively in the world through the various experiences on academy curriculum and extra-curriculum activities at the university. The Object of study is 123 undergraduate students from first-grade to fourth-grade at a university in Gyeonggido. We extracted the university activity experience variables and the civic education competency questions from the questionnaires of National Study of School Evaluation(NSSE). The results of this study were as follows. Firstly, the civic competency of Promoting community spirit showed the strongest correlation between the experience combined from different courses when completing assignments and the policy direction providing support to help students succeed academically at the university. Secondly, the civic competency of Reinforcing ethics and values is cultivated through the process to search for their own strengths and weaknesses. This competency was a stronger correlated with an individual experience than an group experience or the policy of university education. Thirdly, the civic competency of Understanding and accepting multiple cultures had correlations with the most factors. Fourth, that of Social Participation is very suggestive. It had stronger correlations with all the questions of university s education policies except for academy-curriculum policy rather than those of individual and group levels. The implications based on the results are as follows. Firstly, Community should be emphasized at content and process of the courses so that students can learn citizenship naturally. Secondly, it is important to reinforce ethics and values in the policy direction at the university. Thirdly, it is important that students have experience encouraging contact among students from different backgrounds(social, racial/ethnic, religious etc). Lastly, university should educate students to have the right of participation and responsibility, to be interested in extra-curriculum domain as well as academy curriculum-centered policy.
