Abstract
The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the theoretical basis necessary for developing courses of general education intended to improving global competences of the students in the korean universities. Thereby the starting point is the position that the higher education institutions should provide the learners with the opportunity to experience intercultural lerarning in order to improve intercultural competence. As a result of the research, the following can be summarized. Firstly, this study illustrated the rationale for developing course dealing with intercultural competence, followed by defining the term intercultural competence and intercultural learning. The term intercultural competence is defined here as ability to use knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for the successful and effective intercultural communication based on understanding of both one s own and others cultures facing the situation in which people from different cultural backgrounds contact and exchange messages one another. The other crucial term intercultural learning can be defined as learning process in which students can learn and experience knowledge, attitudes, and skills of the own and others cultures needed to appropriately understand each other and successfully interact with those from different cultural backgrounds. Secondly, it investigated the category of the learning contents, type of the learning methodology, and the kind of assessment tools because these components are important for developing courses. As the category of contents can be mentioned for instance knowledge, skills, attitudes about own and other culture including cultural patterns, linguistic proficiency, and nonverbal conventions. With regard to the learning methodology it suggested study types such as observation, interpretation, and practices of the cultural incidents as well as action learning through role play or virtual simulation and cyber exchanges via e-mail or online cites providing real-time intercultural communication and so on. In order to measure the achievement in the learner s intercultural competence it introduced the assessment tools such as portfolio, digital video, digital storytelling etc. Finally, it gave some suggestions which can help to develop course dealing with cultural competence and learning. The results of the study can contribute theoretically to prepare for planning and implementing development and management courses which can enable korean students to be equipped with global capabilities. Given that the contexts of the korean colleges are different, courses should be designed according to their own situation respectively. In addition, it is recommended that further studies are conducted to refine the quality of the courses.
