Development of communicative competency assessment tools for improving curriculum of general education

Abstract
As a kind of case study, the current research focused on reporting the series of process for enhancing the communicative competency of students in higher education: 1) identifying communicative competency, 2) developing the communicative competency assessment tools and conducting the assessment, and 3) analyzing the results and reforming the curriculum of liberal education. First, communicative competency identified five domains including reading, writing, listening, speaking, and argumentation, and three competencies: acceptance and understanding, communication and expression, and criticism and problem-solving. Each competency was composed of three sub-competencies. Second, competency assessment tools of writing and argumentation domains were developed by the experts of each fields. Competency assessment conducted two or three times by the students who registered writing subjects and argumentation-method subjects in general education. Several suggestions were proposed to improve curriculum of general education on the grounds of the comparison of the results of communicative competency assessment. This research will be contributed to give implications for institutions to reform the curriculum based on the competency assessment.
