Abstract
This study examines the effect of self-narrative writing education in university on students’ trust disposition and self-esteem and explores how to apply self-narrative writing to general education program for personality education. The participants for the study were 171 undergraduate students of 18 to 21 years old which took specific required classes of general education, and divided into two groups: the experimental group and the control group. Pre-test and post-test of the two groups were conducted in order to study whether the classes including self-narrative writing affected students’ trust disposition and self-esteem. We identified similarity between two groups through the pre-test of trust disposition and self-esteem on the first week of the classes, and conducted the post-test with the same scale on the 9th week when self-narrative writing ended in order to compare the results of the pre-test and the post-test between the experimental and the control groups. Descriptive statistics and t-test were performed for data analyses, using PASW 18.0 program. As a result of trust disposition of the experimental group, the mean of the pre-test was 2.81(SD=.39) and the mean of the post-test was 3.76(SD=.30), which showed that the post-test was 0.95 higher than the pre-test and the difference was statistically significant(p<.001). As for self-esteem of the experimental group, the mean of the pre-test was 4.54(SD=.65), that of the post-test was 4.68(SD=.64), and the difference was also statistically significant(p<.01). The study showed that the students of the experimental group, which took the classes of self-narrative writing as one of general education programs, could develop positive perspective and self-identity through recollecting, reconstructing, and reinterpreting their past experiences.
